It's been one of those months. A good month, peppered with some interest, some fun, a little pink -eye, and a corneal injury which was more serious than we ever imagined-but now we're on the road to healing Ethan's eye. More on that later.
You know when an accident happens these days, you type dozens of emails trying to fill people in for prayer requests/school absences and such and then you just don't feel like re-telling the story? That's where I am. So I am going to cheat and cut & paste from some earlier emails.
We didn't see Ethan's accident happen, I walked in right afterward. He was playing with a hard plastic tube of toys and trying to remove the little action figures from it. It has very sharp corners and we think he either fell onto the corner, or he hit himself in the eye with it. Immediately after, I found him face down lying on a pillow saying that he couldn't see or open his eye. It was very scary-I kept thinking it would get better, but it took almost 2 hours for the eye to open, then it was swelled to the point that it couldn't open really for a couple of days. It was a jagged cut in the cornea, and now it has healed the point of being just a small hole, but it right over his pupil so his vision is still affected.
Originally we took him to the pediatrician, and they were great. The 2nd day we went back, and the PA thought the cut/scratch had healed, but E's eye was still unable to open, very swollen, and red. That afternoon, he saw the eye doctor and she said the cut wasn't healed-still very much an open wound and painful. After a visit the next day-things were still not good (now 48 hours after injury). He had something called "iritis" where the iris goes into hyper-drive and produces loads of white blood cells to promote healing-so his eye was very red. We upped the antibiotic drops and added a antibiotic cream. Two days later-back at the eye doctor-cut is improved greatly-just a circular wound as opposed to jagged line-but wound is directly in front of pupil, so vision still affected. But the Doctor thinks it should heal by Friday-over a week & a half afer injury. This was one heck of a 'poke in the eye.' and we are so, so lucky.
He acts almost normal now, the pain has stopped and the ophthalmologist says it should heal by Friday, and reminds us how lucky we are. It really was a freak accident, I think.
Other than the cornea excitement, I have been teaching lessons, accompanying choirs, attending Awana & College & Career, helping with the "clubs" committee at Ethan's school and generally staying so very busy. Life is good, and mine is blessed beyond measure. Thank you Lord!!
